LA chief: Pap laws ‘farce’ with Britney ‘behaving’

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 7:16 pm

Police Chief William Bratton said Thursday the city has had fewer problems with paparazzi since Britney Spears “started wearing clothes” and other celebrities changed their partying ways.

“If you notice, since Britney started wearing clothes and behaving; Paris is out of town not bothering anybody anymore, thank God, and evidently, Lindsay Lohan has gone gay, we don’t seem to have much of an issue,” Bratton told KNBC-TV.

Bratton said the altered behavior makes proposals being considered for new laws to crack down on paparazzi an unnecessary “farce” because photogs who swarm neighborhoods and shopping districts have been losing interest in snapping stars in trouble.

“If the ones that attract the paparazzi behave in the first place, like we expect of anybody, that solves about 90 percent of the problem. The rest we can deal with,” he said.

Bratton, wearing gray gym clothes with a towel around his neck, said he interrupted his workout to speak to a TV reporter after hearing Councilman Dennis Zine discussing possible new restrictions on freelance photographers. Zine was set to lead a meeting later in the day at City Hall to discuss ways to restrict aggressive paparazzi.

Officials from celeb enclaves in and around Los Angeles such as Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Malibu were to take part.

Bratton called the hearing “grandstanding and foolishness” and said he would not take part.

“We have sufficient laws on the books” to deal with aggressive paparazzi, he said.

Bratton later made similar remarks to other TV stations.

Zine said his concerns about paparazzi were prompted by the $25,000 that police spent to escort Spears from her Studio City home to a West Los Angeles medical center for a psychiatric evaluation in January.

Zine has authored a motion for the city to require a “personal safety zone” around celebs, but it has not yet been heard by the City Council. Bratton has said such an ordinance would be ambiguous and difficult to enforce.

In the past, the city has used existing ordinances to curb paparazzi. Earlier this month, for example, police arrested two photographers for loitering near Spears’ home.

Does charity and welfare slow down human evolution by hampering natural selection?

Filed under: Social Science — smitha @ 3:36 pm

The question is about evolutionary biology and how it applies to Homosapiens living in a society that advocates protecting the weakest. I realize that all social organisms such as ants and elephants protect the weakest among them to a certain extend, but these organisms cannot do it as effectively as modern human beings with all their technology.

No, if anything it speeds it up. Fit does not equal rich. Fit means able to pass along DNA.

——–

Well when Darwim made his theory of evolution he did not suggest nor intend to suggest it be applied to human beings. Human beings have emotions and relationships for a reason. Because of this it is in our instinct to help out others that are weaker. We as a human race have survived all this time helping each other out so no one can say doing so will be our downfall because weaklings are surviving. Perhaps this is why certain animal species have perished, because they didn’t effectively help each other out…

Vegetarians who have cats, if you had to kill to feed your cat would you do so?

Filed under: Food And Drink — smitha @ 1:22 pm

I ask this because many of us still do not really understand on a visceral level what truly is in those cans and bags and at what price they came. Packaging can be a mental anaspetic.

The larger moral question this begs is is a cat inherently more valuable than a chicken, cow, fish, etc? Basically an exponential amount of lives are taken simply to care for an animal that is associated with needing meat for survival. How can the lives of many other animals be worth less than a single animal?

This is especially in light that if large enough efforts where taken could theoretical be fed vegan. The products and testimonies are out there. I’m not saying it is easy or cheap but that these other beings also need our love and attention. Nepotism is a danger we all must be aware of.

No, I wouldn’t. I don’t live in an area where allowing the cats to feed wild is possible. I’m a bird lover too, and I have lizards in my yard! Another no to your question, is a cat — or dog — worth more than a chicken, cow, sheep, fish, etc.

I’d have serious reservations about switching a pet over to a vegetarian diet at this point, or ever, but in truth it’s not something I’ve ever explored in detail. I’ve always been careful not to impose my own beliefs on others, but then again the environmental and moral consequences of keeping domestic animals is something that will have to be addressed as the world population continues to swell and resource allocations shift.

Sounds like I’ve got some homework to do to get up to speed on this.

——–

I think it’s a very difficult question to answer. I don’t own a cat, but if I did I imagine I would be attached to it and love and care for it. Cats are carnivorous by nature so I don’t think it is fair to force your morals or dietary requirement upon them. I think we can make more ethically informed choices by choosing free range meat or wild caught fish rather than support factory farming and the pet food industry. I just don’t think it is fair to make a naturally carnivorous animal live on an unnatural diet.

I think you’ve raised a very interesting point about the inherent value of two different species. It reminds me of a Tom Regan line of philosophical reasoning. The question of inherent value is complex, can we really say the intrinsic value of a worm is equal to the intrinsic value of say an elephant? I think no matter how much we really want to apply the principle of equality of interests, in practice it’s not always possible. I believe deep down there’s a bit of a speciest in all of us.

Perhaps we should be questioning pet ownership in general. Is it right to even have them in the first place. I think the best thing we can do is try to choose more ethically sourced products rather than force cats on a vegan diet.

But to answer your question, no I don’t think I could kill an animal my self. I do know what goes on in that can of cat food, but I couldn’t do it my self.

—–

why not let the cat go to let it get its own food…almost all cats would…im vegan but wouldnt even consider turning my pets vegan because they are natural carnivors. They wouldnt survive without meat unlike humans who may be natural omnivors but can live on a vegan lifesyle and eat different kinds of things than most animals…Im all for animals and totaly agree with you on the aspect that one life is equal to another but they eat meat naturaly…and i try to do my part by not eating other creatures and taking care of my body and pets…

What % of the Earth’s land is used for agriculture?

Filed under: Science And Mathematics — smitha @ 5:34 am

What percent of the Earth’s land is available for agricultur

As of the year 2000, about 37 percent of Earth’s land area was agricultural land. About one-third of this area, or 11 percent of Earth’s total land, is used for crops. The balance, roughly one-fourth of Earth’s land area, is pastureland, which includes cultivated or wild forage crops for animals and open land used for grazing

Is organic milk federally mandated to be pasteurized at higher temperatures than regular milk?

Filed under: Science And Mathematics — smitha @ 11:52 am

You can buy organic milk that has not been (ultra) pasteurized. Just read labels. Horizon is ultra past., but we shouldn’t be buying their milk anyway as it isn’t really organic and their factory farms are under investigation.

But the gov. doesn’t mandate it currenlty. Maybe as that Codex Alimentarius thing goes into effect they will. Codex would say it makes the milk safer to drink, but it would only make the milk less nutritious.

Get Workers To Stop Smoking On My Property?

Filed under: Family And Relationships — smitha @ 2:52 pm

Some People Are Cleaning And Coating My Deck. My Dad Is The Person Who Hired Them, And They All Smoke, On My Property! I’m 10000000000000000000000000000000000 % Agains’t Any Smokers, And I Hate Smokers. They Smoke And They Leave Butts All Around My House, And It Reaks Of Smoke Untill A Good Rain. Sure, It’s Outside, But It Still Is Horrible. I Tell My Dad To Tell Them To Stop Smoking Around The House, But He Just Laughs, as If It’s A Joke. I Can’t Let My Poor Cats Outside Untill It Rains, As One Already Died Of a Lung Problem From Smoke From Outside (RIP Fuzzle) How Do I Get My Dad To Know I’m Not Joking And I Mean It When I Say It?!

No, They Stay Around For A Long Time, It’s An All Day Job, and It Takes 3 Weeks Every Day! And The Sand Won’t Work, Since They Are Using Chemicals And Stuff, Nothing Can Be On The Deck And They Probably Won’t Notice It (I Already Tried It Once, It Didn’t Work)

Okay, I Wan’t To Tell Them To Just Stop Smoking, But Come On, I’m 11, They’ll Just Laugh! And I Can’t Just Fire Them! My Dad Has No Problem With Them Smoking. And They Won’t Listen, Besides, I Don’t Want Them Smoking On My Property, and I Can’t Just Send Them To My Poor Neighbors Or Something, So It Will Be Just As Bad If a Put An Ashtray Near Them!

Yeah Right, Compassion For Smokers! I’m Sorry, But No. I Do Have An Insane Hate For Smokers! Now, You, Paul D, Seem Like A Good Smoker, But They Aren’t. Besides, It’s Not Really My Property, But I Live here, And I Believe I Have All Rights To tell Them To Go Away, My Dad Won’t Want That! We Need Them To Do The Job, But They Suck! And, I’m Not Getting Rid Of The Deck, That’s Pretty Insane, It’s A Great Deck!

Oh Really? I Know Nothing About Smoking? Really? That’s Wierd, I Thought I Did…..But Who Knows, I Mean, I Don’t Know Anything About Myself, Do I?

OH COME ON!! I KNOW PLENTY ABOUT SMOKING! It Kills, I Make People Fugly, And It Stinks, It Has Lots And Lots Of Deadly Chemicals, And My Cat Died From Second Hand Smoke! The Cat Had Lung Problems, Not Leukimeah (I Know, Misspelling) And, You Don’t Even Know Me, So Don’t Just Guess I Know Nothing! I Also Know It’s A Disgusting, Ugly Habit, And It Makes Greenhouse Gasses Even Worse!

So, Don’t Think You Know Me! No One Knows Me, Espiceacly (I Know, More Misspeling) A Dumb A** Smoker Like You!

And, It’s Not Like I Let My Cat Out The Second The People Were Done, But It Really Wreaked Of Smoke For A Week, And Come On, I’m Not That Dumb!

Besides, I Help My Parents Pay The Bills, And I Like Helping The House Debt, Or Whatever You Would Call It! So I Call It My Property, As A Pay About 30% Of The Bills! It’s Fair, And That Is My Deck!

The workers are not going to be around that long.
Leave them alone and let them get their job done.
Put a pail full of sand out there for their cigarette butts… you can enrich the sand with baking soda to suck up that funky smoke smell.

…………….

If this is your house then you just tell them not to smoke in and around your home…show them somewhere they can smoke…and leave some ashtrays near by for them to use..or else get rid of the decking and then you wont need these work men near your home.

…….

let them finish their job and provide ashtrays or a old coffee can and tell them if you must smoke then this where you put your cigarette butts otherwise fire them and let someone else do the job

…….

Since your Dad hired them it is his responsibilityh to inform them not to smoke on the property if that is your wish. Since he just laughs at you, and you are the property owner, call the employer of the people, and inform them that they are not permitted on the property any longer if they can’t respect you as the property owner.
I am a smoker, and I work as a caretaker/grounds keeper on an island. The clients are the ones who pay my salary, and I do what is needed to keep them happy. They don’t smoke, so I do not smoke on their property or near their summer homes either.
It is called courtesy.
With that said, you are blowing all of the smoking things that you say are prevalent around your property out of proportion. You are being a bit hateful towards smokers and that is actually discrimination towards a group of people. You said it yourself, you “HATE” smokers. Not all smokers are bad people. Some of us are willing to be polite and courtious towards those in the world who do not smoke. Learn a little compassion in life, you actually might get further with your desires.

Please explain,why most eco-groups (money)donations are only -??

Filed under: Environment — smitha @ 12:43 pm

They rake in millions yet only donate 10-20% of funde true eco-groups???Do they have incomes first rather then sharring it bween the boards…???

Having “looked” at many not for profit org. and one chick whose on the board, its all crooked. The have salaries form it and costs which equal 98% of what comes in stays in,1 to 2% goes to help other org.or some caus

———

That is the problem with many not for profit organizations, that take any donations. You have the option of asking what percentage goes to the cause and what goes to admin costs and salaries. It isn’t just eco groups it’s all organizations. There are good and bad. I don’t donate to any, I belong to a couple groups that take action without asking for money.

In there defense, organizations that have full time paid employees often have better results and accomplish more. As in all things, do a little research and decide where your donations will do the most good.

Tupperware shipping and handling?

Filed under: Business And Finance — smitha @ 12:27 pm

does anyone know how to calculate shipping and handling for tupperware????

1. Total the merchandise. = $148.50
2. Add Shipping and Handling (10%) = $14.85
3. Add Taxes (in this case 8%) = $13.07

And there you have it!

Retail Price of Customer Items $148.50
Subtotal $148.50
Shipping $14.85
Tax 8.000% $13.07
Total Amount Due from Customer $176.42

*************************

There is a MINIMUM shipping and handling fee of $4.50.

So, if your sale is $35.00, your S&H is $4.50 NOT the $3.50.

IF you are having a party, you CAN combine orders and charge only the 10% if you prefer.

ALSO, remember that if you place an order less than $100 you are charged an extra $4.50 for shipping and handling.

This means, if your order is $50.00, you will pay $5.00 AND $4.50.

The way to avoid this is to combine orders.

I hope this helps.

If not, contact me and I’ll explain it further.
