Jordin Sparks pleased with virgin pledge but finds being role model difficult

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 8:11 pm

American pop/R andB singer Jordin Sparks has no qualms about making a pledge to stay a virgin until her wedding night, but she does find being considered a role model a little daunting.

Sparks, 18, was very flattered when she was praised for her chastity pledge and for setting herself apart from so many other celeb troublemakers, at the American Music Awards, where she presented with an un-televised award as Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist.

“The role model tag has definitely been thrust on me and that’s something I don’t take lightly,” Fox News quoted Sparks as saying.

The “American Idol” alum recalled that it had been just two years ago that she was sitting at home as an aspiring singer watching these very awards, but felt that there was no young performer she could really look up to as a figure of inspiration.

“That really motivated me. Being a role model is fun but I find it difficult,” she admitted.

“I have to constantly watch myself, watch my mouth and who I hang out with,” she added.

Alesha Dixon ready to get back to the dating scene

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 7:32 pm

It has been more than a year since English singer Alesha Dixon split from her hubby MC Harvey, but she still does not have a man in her life.

Dixon, 30, was shattered when her hubby Harvey fathered a child by his co-star in ‘The Games’, Javine Hylton, but has learnt how to move on.

“I’ve moved on. I’m not sitting here hurting. It’s the past,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

The reason she does not have a boyfriend is because “you can’t be with someone for six years and after a year be ready to put your heart on the line again.”

But she is now ready to meet someone, though she says she has one minor drawback in her and that is her level headedness stops her from having fun.

Fashion gets an A certificate. Director Madhur Bhandarkar protests and tells us why this film is special

Corporate and Page 3 were movies that provided a realistic view into the trials and tribulations of the rich and famous. Madhur Bhandarkar says people in society, their lives and issues have always fascinated him, so, naturally, it was imperative that a film on fashion would soon follow. “All society parties have models and designers as guests. I wanted to highlight this fraternity through a film,” says Bhandarkar in a telephonic interview. Fashion is ready for release on October 29 but much to Bhandarkar’s dismay has been given an A certificate, though he says he removed all possible objectionable content. “The censor board have their own opinions and one has to understand that,” he states philosophically.

Bhandarkar’s last film Traffic Signal, that narrates a depressing story of beggars and hawkers at red lights, didn’t really work. “Though the idea had been on my mind, I did not immediately start working on

Fashion. Otherwise the audience would have labelled me as someone who only makes films on high society,” he continues.

There’s a lot of hype about Fashion, about how it exposes the dark side of the glamour industry but Bhandarkar rubbishes the trivia. “It views the fashion world from the perspective of the middle-class man who comes home after a nine-to-five job and turns on the TV set to see models walking on the ramp. His idea of the fashion industry ends there. I take that audience behind the ramp into the professional and personal lives of the models and designers,” he explains. Bhandarkar’s style of cinema has coined a new phrase in Bollywood, ‘middle cinema’. The film stars Priyanka Chopra (who plays Meghna Mathur) in the lead along with a host of real life models. It’s Bhandarkar’s most expensive venture yet, with budgets exceeding Rs 40 crore. “I visited many fashion weeks in Delhi and Mumbai, spoke with choreographers, model coordinators, designers and buyers to give the film authenticity,” says Bhandarkar. His next film, Jail, explores lives of inmates.

Troupe sex for Kanye West’s new album launch party

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 8:38 pm

Kanye West caused a stir at the launch party of his eagerly anticipated album ‘808s and Heartbreak’ by inviting 40 naked women to attend.

The rapper unveiled the album - due to be released in November - at a lavish bash at Los Angeles’ Ace Gallery, but guests were stunned to find the room full of nude women wearing masks.

“After waiting in an area with an open bar and a DJ, we walked up a driveway illuminated by fluorescent lights to a darkened room where we saw 40 nude women. Most of them were wearing strange masks made of wool,” the Sun quoted a source, as saying.

“They stood in the middle of the room - black girls at the front and white girls at the back. Then the entire album played without any introduction or explanation,” the source added.

West insists the women were part of an arranged art show he masterminded with Italian artist Vanessa Beecroft.

Forecast for fashion

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 5:28 am

When the whole world is facing an intense financial crisis, the fashion world is witnessing a major expansion of scale and budgets, starting with the Delhi Fashion Week today. DFW, the maiden venture by the Fashion Foundation of India (FFI) begins today, followed by the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week tomorrow under the aegis of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

The interesting thing is that no matter what winds of credit crunch buffet a country, there is no cutting corners in luxury. Even when the American stock markets were burning, the New York Fashion Week went ahead successfully.

Just a few days ago, as crisis hit Europe, the Paris Fashion Week did not break its stride. The same is happening in India.

No doubt, the business of fashion will be doubled with the introduction of two fashion weeks at the same time. The number of buyers will be many more than what one fashion week could attract.

According to Sumeet Nair of DFW, the FFI has garnered over 150 buyers, including Isetan from Japan, Ovo Studio from Madrid, Design Best from Bourdeaux and Seibu from Hong Kong. “We see the financial crisis more as an opportunity, as buyers may want new, high-value creativity with lower price tags,” says Nair.

The WLIFW has over 160 registered buyers already and is expecting a few more. This list has well-known names like Vittorio Radice, CEO of La Rinascente, Harvey Nichols, Anthropology (with over 100 stores in the US) and Liberty of London.

“There hasn’t been a single cancellation so far, even with the financial crisis,” says FDCI president Sunil Sethi. “We hope the creativity of our designers will bring bloom to the gloom.

” Now, if buyers are invited by organisers without the clause that they can only attend one event, their presence will benefit all designers, as both sides seem to have lots of talent on show. Two fashion weeks have also fuelled demands for models, choreographers, set designers, hotels etc, generating more business already.

Now it remains to be seen how many buyers write a cheque for the main attraction - the designers.

Vishal-Shekhar hit right chord with ‘Dostana’, yet again

Filed under: Entertainment And Music — smitha @ 1:05 am

Film: ‘Dostana’; Music Director: Vishal-Shekhar; Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan, Vishal, Saleem, Amanat Ali, Shankar Mahadevan; Music Rights: Sony Music; Rating: *** 1/2

Vishal and Shekhar seem to be having a rollicking time this year, with almost every album of theirs setting the cash registers ringing. After ‘Tashan’, ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’, they’re out with ‘Dostana’ and it rocks.

‘Desi girl’ is an energy packed track that has a good dose of thumping dance beats and variety in terms of lyrics. Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan render it with full gusto and live up to the status of being the most energetic singers in Bollywood. All in all, this track should pep up the pace of the movie.

Next is ‘Jaane Kyun’. Vishal Dadlani should get the credit for the success of the song. Not only has he composed ‘Jaane Kyun’ along with Shekhar, but sung the entire song. In spite of a few Hinglish terms, Anvita Dutt Guptan’s lyrics are peppy and sweet. This happy, romantic track will find a lot of takers.

And if listeners want more of Vishal as lead singer, there’s ‘Khabar nahi’. Even though he has Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali for company, Vishal stands out and hits the right chord with listeners. A gentle, melodious piece, again falling in the romantic genre, ‘Khabar Nahi’ cannot be disliked.

The series of pleasant numbers doesn’t end here. ‘Kuch Kum’ takes it forward. Shaan renders the rhythmical and flowing number to perfection. ‘Kuch Kum’ has some beautiful lyrics, courtesy Vishal Dadlani, who is determined to impress his fans. Listeners would not only like to hear this track repeatedly but would also look forward to watching it onscreen.

‘Maa da laadla’ affirms that ‘Dostana’ isn’t just about soothing, pleasant numbers but also about celebration. Punjabi in flavour, the song has good beats and is sung by Saleem. The lyrics of the song, penned by Kumaar, are noteworthy. The track has a slight humorous essence as well.

Vishal goes behind the mike once again to sing ‘Shut Up & Bounce’. He teams up with Sunidhi Chauhan in this out and out lively item number. The track isn’t as great as the previous numbers, but cannot be called a weak piece.

Karan Johar, producer of the film, can heave a sigh of relief as the music of his film will keep his cash register jingling. Except for ‘Shut Up & Bounce’, each song in ‘Dostana’ is wrapped in fun and peppiness on the one hand, and melody and rhythm on the other.
