Dogs take all avenues to reach Westminster show

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 12:15 am

The champion chow chow came from China, the smooth-coated Dachshund arrived from South Africa. The best Saluki, well, he started out long ago in a test tube. Dogs take all sorts of paths to reach the Westminster Kennel Club event. On Tuesday night, we’ll see which one leads to best in show.

On Monday night, only plaids and kilts were missing. A 7-year-old Scottish deerhound named Tiger Woods — his owner is a huge golfer — won the hound group, then a Scottish terrier took the terrier group.

“Maybe I ought to have a Scotch,” said Gabriel Rangel, the terrier’s handler.

Rangel came with his own good-luck charm. He led Sadie around the ring with the same leash that guided a Scottish terrier called Bingo to the 1967 best in show prize at Madison Square Garden.

“Worked pretty well, didn’t it?” owner Amelia Musser said. “I think we’ll keep using it.”

A standard poodle called Yes was best among the nonsporting dogs and a puli took the herding group. The best sporting, toy and working dogs will be chosen Tuesday night, ahead of judge Sari Tietjen pointing to her choice for America’s top dog.

There are 170 breeds and varieties at this 133rd edition of Westminster, with a perky Brussels griffon and a monkey-faced affenpinscher among the favorites.

From the no-show Borzois to the empty seats, it was abundantly clear the nation’s recession took a toll on the annual event.

“We understand it,” said Westminster spokesman David Frei, the TV host of the USA Network coverage. “For most people, dog shows are a hobby. When money gets tight, people spend it on food and schools and things they absolutely need.”

Last February, the Garden was packed with more than 15,000 roaring fans when a precocious beagle called Uno was picked as best in show. Uno was back Monday night for a victory tour, but the Garden was only two-thirds full to see him.

“It’s very noticeable,” French bulldog handler Monica Schott said. “I was hoping to see that a lot of people would spend their money to come here, to give them some outlet from what’s going on with the economy. I guess not.”

Famed heiress Patty Hearst was among those on hand. She won a prize last year with her French bulldog, but was shut out this visit.

Like their owners, dog took different routes to the green carpet. Take champion Excelsior Yosef Areli, a 4-year-old Saluki. Sire ‘Sno Foolin’ has been gone for 20 years, but thanks to modern science, he was able to extend his champion breeding lineage.

“It’s been perfected over the years and now it’s just about foolproof,” said Harry Bennett, who handled this winning dog. “It’s a good way to go.”

On the day Tiger Woods and his wife announced the birth of a son, the golfing great’s name again made news in the sporting world. The Scottish deerhound owner Gayle Bontecou had good reason to pick it.

“I’m a huge golfer,” she said.

A black puli called Conrad closed out the night with a win. The breed is known for its dreadlocks, but handler Linda Pitts of Knoxville, Tenn., said the hairstyle does not occur naturally.

Pitts said the dogs needed to be groomed as puppies to train the hair in that pattern, lest it become too scraggly.

“It’s a beauty contest,” she said.

Pitts said Conrad gets a bath every other week and won’t get washed before Tuesday night’s best in show final.

“It’d take too long for him to dry,” she said. Pitts added Conrad’s hair will be tied up like “a Christmas tree” so it won’t collect dust and debris on the street.

There was an hour-long protest outside the Garden by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, with two members dressed up as Ku Klux Klan members. PETA claims the American Kennel Club’s promotion of purebred dogs is harmful to their health.

Said Frei: “We want to produce the next generation of healthy and happy dogs, not just for the show ring but for the couches at home.”

Endangered species ruling could slow development in floodplains

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 11:05 am

A ruling that development along dozens of rivers flowing from the Cascade Mountains to Washington state’s Puget Sound jeopardizes endangered salmon, steelhead and killer whales could shape future construction in floodplains nationwide.

At the heart of the issue is the National Flood Insurance Program, which for 40 years has regulated river corridor development but paid scant attention to endangered species. That could change.

The “jeopardy opinion” from the National Marine Fisheries Service in Seattle , coupled with an injunction blocking development in Florida that threatens the habitat of the endangered Key Deer, may force major changes in the federal flood insurance program.

The fisheries service has suggested a temporary moratorium on building in floodplains surrounding Puget Sound . The timeout would allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency , which administers the flood insurance program, along with state and local jurisdictions, to sort out what, if any, new building restrictions may be required.

“It takes the National Flood Insurance Program in a whole new direction,” said Rollin Harper , a city planner for Everson in northwest Washington , where half the town of 2,200 is within the floodplain of the Nooksack River .

Nationwide, 5 million people in 20,200 communities have flood insurance policies. Since 1978, the policies have paid out $31.6 billion in claims.

Most homeowners’ policies don’t cover flood damage, yet mortgage lenders require flood insurance when loaning for purchases of house in floodplains. The national program underwrites the policies offered by private insurers.

FEMA requires local communities to adopt floodplain construction standards before it will underwrite flood policies.

In its opinion, the National Marine Fisheries Service said that those standards are too weak. It said continued development in the floodplains “jeopardized the continued existence” of the salmon, steelhead and killer whales, or orcas.

The opinion involved Puget Sound Chinook salmon, Puget Sound steelhead, Hood Canal chum salmon and the population of 100 or so orcas that roam the inland waters. Salmon are a staple source of food for killer whales.

The river floodplains provide not just critical spawning habitat but also natural shade, cover and forage for juvenile salmon before they head downstream to the ocean.

In addition to suggesting a temporary construction moratorium, the opinion also recommended a series of “reasonable and prudent” alternatives, including buffer zones, naturalizing levees and mitigating the effects of development by restoring other habitats.

The opinion also called for FEMA to take into account the endangered salmon and killer whales in mapping the state’s floodplains. The maps are critical in deciding which areas require flood insurance and which don’t.

The fisheries service admitted in its opinion that after adopting the new standards “the rate of floodplain development is expected to slow in all National Flood Insurance Program jurisdictions.”

National and local builders and real estate interests are worried.

“This opinion essentially makes FEMA a super land-use zoning board,” said Duane Desiderio , a vice president for the National Association of Homebuilders .

Bill Riley , the vice president of government affairs for the Washington Association of Realtors , warned that not only might FEMA further restrict growth in floodplains, it also could become more difficult to sell an existing home in these areas because purchasers may find flood insurance hard to obtain or expensive.

“This will cause a lot of uncertainties, and counties and cities could be risking lawsuits,” Riley said.

Environmentalists forced the issue by successfully asking a judge to order a review of the flood insurance program. But they say they hope to avoid further litigation.

“We hope this doesn’t end up back in court,” said John Kostyack of the National Wildlife Federation . ” FEMA has now been told the only way to avoid jeopardizing endangered species is by rewriting the regulations. We can’t pave over the last remaining habitat and shouldn’t be using federal dollars to do it.”

FEMA officials declined to comment. During the next 30 days, FEMA officials will work with local communities to determine an implementation plan.

Birds for sale….where to buy??

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 2:52 am

I took my daughter out today all set to buy a pair of zebra finches with a cage. She has been asking for a while now and as she has been very good at keeping her other pets clean and fed I agreed to get her the birds. I couldn’t believe it when we tried 5 local pet shops and not 1 of them sell birds now let alone the cage. If any one could let me know where I could buy finches and a cage around the Alton Hampshire uk area I would be most appreciative.

Get down to your newsagent and buy or order the papers called Cage & Aviary Birds or Fur & Feather, bird breeders advertise in these.

The majority of large Pet stores no longer stock birds so you need to find a private pet shop or breeder.

Look in Yellow pages.

Check out petfinder.com you can search by animal and zip code there. Also try calling your local shelter. They may have some, if not they may be able to tell you who does.

Can I put 2 guppies, 3 glo-fish (zebra danios), and an angelfish in the same tank?

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 2:36 pm

The tank size is a 20 gallon and has heater, thermometer, filter, lighting, and decor. I already have the 2 guppies and 1 glo-fish.

glo-fish are genetically modified danios, so they need to school like danios. you should have 6 of them. you will also need catfish-4 otos and a dwarf pleco would be a good cleanup crew. angelfish prefer 30g+ tanks, so you would be better off with a few mollies/platies instead.

angelfish might eat guppies when they get older, but when young they will stick to eating fish food. they don’t have to have groups-they want to be alone or in a mated pair. if you want to be guaranteed a mated pair (genders are hard to differ in angelfish), it would be best to get about six of them in a 50g and let them pair off.

——–

the angel fish are usually very agressive so it would be best if you put them by themselvse and as far as the glo fish and the guppies together i don’t know but you might want to ask your local pet smart hope this helps p.s if you won’t to breed the guppies you need to seperate the babies from the adults because guppies eat babies they will eat your glofish babies too

What fruits and veggies do u feed cockatiels???

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 1:10 pm

I have 2 cockatiels and i kno that their diet is suppose 2 consist of fruits, veggies, and other healthy food. What r these foods and how do u get ur cockatiel 2 try it?Is cooked white rice good 4 cockatiels?

Mine loved baby food. I gave them organic brands that included peas, carrots, corn and squash. They also loved their veggies in the raw. Again, try to choose organic so you aren’t passing along any ugly pesticides to your bird. Celery, green beans, corn, zucchini, - just about anything.
hard boil an egg and let him have a quarter of it every few days. A little macaroni pasta won’t hurt either.

Don’t feed your bird avacodo or mushrooms or chocolate. Birds can’t eat those !

How big is the biggest fish in the world?

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 10:29 am

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow filter feeding shark that is the largest living fish species. This distinctively-marked shark is the only member of its genus Rhincodon and its family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhinodontes before 1984), which is grouped into the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea. The species is believed to have originated about 60 million years ago.[2]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark

—–

The whale shark is up to 46 feet (14 m), weighing up to 15 tons. The average size is 25 feet (7.6 m) long It is the largest fish in the world. Females are larger than males (like most sharks).

——

it depends. the biggest fresh water fish at the moment is the giant catfish, the largest being 9m and weighing 646 pounds, but if you want salt water then the obvious answer would be the whale shark.

Why is cat meowing so much?

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 2:55 am

I just came back from vacation, cat was in cat hotel for 2 weeks, I brought her home yesterday and she has been meowing so much. I went to buy food and came back, I could hear her meowing REALLY LOUD from my car, she doesnt like it when I go to the bedroom to sleep, she meows at the door for hours! it’s like she likes me to be awake and paying attention to her, what the hell is wrong with her?

Sounds like your kitty missed you. You need to shower your kitty with attention, two weeks is a long time. Not to mention two big moves for a kitty in two weeks, typically cats don’t like surroundings to change too much too fast. Keep your bedroom door open too. As long as your kitty stops when you giver her attention or play with her then there probably isn’t much to have concern over. Just pet her and talk to her, she is talking to you by meowing. If she doesn’t stop meowing and it sounds like a painful meow, then make her a check up appointment with your vet. She should return to normal in a few days, with some attention and love.

What can i do about the ferret smell?

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 12:25 pm

Keep the bedding clean. If they poop on a certain piece of cloth bedding, take it out and wash it. Clean your litter box twice a day. Once a week, take everything out and deep clean it. Scrub your litter boxes with soap, throw your cloth bedding in the washing machine, and get some Cage Clean from Petsmart. It really neutralizes the odor while cleaning.

Bathe them once a month or so. I’m sorry but there’s nothing wrong with bathing your ferret. I don’t bother with the ferret shampoo, so I use some generic puppy shampoo. It really seems to cut the smell better than all the fruity ferret shampoos. In the meantime, PetCo sells some raspberry body spray for ferrets. It masks odors well between baths.

Get some of the Febreeze AIR. This will pull the smell right out of the air. You might even consider getting your parents to buy a small carpet cleaner like the Spot Bot for when your ferrets have accidents outside of the cage. There is a pet solution which works really great in cleaning up accidents.

There is also something called Bio-Odor which is an additive to the ferrets water that is supposed to make them smell less. It works for me. They sell it in the ferret aisle. It’s not a miracle solution by any means. You still have to do all of the above steps, but it does help cut back on the smell some.

—–

The best thing is to KEEP THEIR CAGE CLEANED! And I mean -really- cleaned, like washing the bedding once a week. This is cloth bedding, of course, old blankets and hammocks, because using hamster bedding of any kind will increase the smell, and it really isn’t good for ferrets.

You only really have to leave one poop in the litter box. More than that will just make it stink more and not do anything else helpful.

Also, DO NOT!!!! bathe your ferrets. Seriously. Bathing a ferret depletes the oils in their skin, which makes the skin create MORE oils, which makes the ferret smell WORSE! A ferret should NEVER be bathed, unless they actually get into something and really need it.
Also, get some febreeze. It is safe to use around ferrets (Don’t spray it directly at them, obviously) and will help clear the odors out in your room

Do u find cats scary?

Filed under: Pets — smitha @ 5:08 am
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol
