Medical Needs of 6.2 Million U.S. Kids Go Unmet

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 12:30 am

Children who do not have health insurance and no regular source of health care are the most likely to have unmet medical needs, researchers at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital report.

The findings show that the government needs to do more to safeguard the health of vulnerable children, said the researchers, who noted the number of children with unmet medical needs increased from 4.5 million in 1998 to 6.2 million in 2006.

The analysis of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showed that:

  • From 1998 to 2006, there was an increase in the proportion of children enrolled in public programs and a decrease in the proportion with private insurance.
  • The rate of uninsured children remained at about 10 percent between 2002 and 2006, but the proportion of uninsured children with no usual source of care (USC) increased to 23 percent in 2006.
  • Hispanic children now account for the largest proportion of uninsured children and those with no USC.
  • Private medical practices continued to be a USC for the majority of children, regardless of insurance status. However, there’s been a recent decrease in the rates of uninsured and SCHIP-enrolled children who have a private practice as a USC.
  • Uninsured children and those with no USC are more likely to have unmet medical needs than privately insured children with a USC.
  • Publicly insured children are twice as likely to have unmet medical needs as children with private insurance.

The findings, published in the February issue of Pediatrics, show that government programs such as Medicaid, the State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and the President’s Health Center Initiative don’t fully address the health-care needs of the most vulnerable children, said lead author Dr. Leesha K. Hoilette, a pediatric health services research fellow in the Child Health Evaluation and Research Unit in the U-M Division of General Pediatrics.

“As the nation continues to focus on the future of health care, and, in particular, health care for children, it seems insufficient to focus policy efforts on either health-care coverage or access alone. Initiatives must be targeted in tandem to increase both coverage and access to reduce unmet medical need,” Hoilette said in a U-M news release.

Molding the artist in your child

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 4:30 am

Children are becoming multi-talented these days and they are leaving no stone unturned to achieve and excel in whatever fields that is available to them. Do you see your kid drawing out indecipherable pictures of whatever it sees? Are you looking at shops or places where you can pick quality kids art supplies that will help mold the budding artist? You need to look for the right kind of easels and painting brushes that form a primary part of your child’s art supplies and you need to take special care to look at the height of the easels as this will be a contributing factor deciding the quality of the art form. There are a lot of places where these quality kids art supplies are found and these can purchased at good rates even over the internet. While parents purchase art supplies like easels, care has to be taken to ensure that they purchase the ones best suited to their children’s requirements. These art supplies should augment and enhance the skills of the little ones and prove to be handy for these budding artists to bring to limelight the talents that God has blessed them with and the same that their parents have passionately allowed them to pursue.

Will a “Womb Scrape” help a woman 2 get pregnant quicker?

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 3:19 pm

The TREATMENT for all forms of MISCARRIAGE except threatened miscarriage, is to remove any remaining fetal tissue that’s left in the womb. This is sometimes called informally a ‘womb scrape’ and involves using an obstetrical series of instruments like spoons, inserted through the cervix, to scrape out whatever material is left. This is an important step because left inside, this material makes an excellent soup for bacterial growth i.e. infection. The procedure itself is done in about half an hour under general anesthesia.

sounds nasty but at least it’s good for your health. Anyways, I’m not sure but maybe it could. You should ask your doctor about that. Also other women who had it and got pregnant afterwards.

………………

well i know i don’t want to scrape my womb.. that sucks..

Is my daughter normal???

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 3:09 pm

She’s 21 months old and has picked up using ‘please’, ‘thank-you’ and ‘your welcome’. She uses them frequently and the right way. We do talk to her this way, but I have only seen a handful of children actually exercise manners and not this young. Is she normal???

my son is 20 months old and he does the same thing as your daughter, but he hasn’t learned your welcome. it is totally normal.. don’t worry!

Your daughter is growing up to be a very polite young lady. Children at this age are like sponges, if they hear you say it then they will as well. The fact that she is using them is a testament to your good parenting. My Son is 22 months and does the same thing, he even said bless you the other day when I sneezed! That made me laugh so hard, he just heard us saying it so he knew it was the right thing to do! Keep up with the manners and she will grow to be a lovely girl!

Do you think shows like high school musical have too much influence on young kids?

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 2:30 pm

I recently returned from a trip out to see my family filled with little girls, ages 5,6 and 7 cousins and sisters. I have 2 boys and the thought of raising a little girl in todays media scares me. They all are obsessed with high school musical, whenever they play pretend they all pretend they are teenagers and I swear they dress like bratz dolls. Am I over reacting or are kids wanting to get older to fast ( I swear more than when I was a little girl)

I wouldn’t worry so much about HSM because of the message that goes along with it. On the other hand, I have a 6 y/o and we do not let her play with Bratz or anything related. That may be extreme to some people, but I believe I have the responsibility as a parent to limit what my daughter is exposed to. I don’t think it is being prudish to not allow your daughter to dress like a “hoochie mama”. We need to pay attention to what our children are watching and listening to so we can talk to them about the messages they are getting from popular media.

How often did you get your babies pictures done profesionally.?

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 12:21 pm

I’ve had my son’s done once when he was two months and was planning on waiting until he could set up on his own to due the next.
Is there any certain way some people do it?

Traditionally, pics are done as newborns, 2 mo, 6 mo, 9 mo, 12 mo, 18 mo, 2 yr and then yearly….I suppose that features the big milestones, smiling sitting up, standing walking, etc….like you I have hundreds of pics so we did newborn, 6 months and then will do a year..

———

I’ve had my daughter’s done once, when she was about 5 weeks old…I hated it. My brother (amateur photographer with a professional camera) now takes all of her pictures. He took her newborn pictures and they came out awesome. After the bad experience getting them done professionally I just decided to have him do it. It’s much easier and they come out better anyway…and they’re a lot cheaper to order - we order from www.pephoto.com . I highly recommend getting a really good camera and doing them on your own. You can take them more often and spend less and get better pics since you know your baby better. It isn’t for everyone, but I really like being able to capture every age and stage.

Is a fourteen year old considered a teenager ?

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 1:40 pm

yes you are considered one, and i know how you feel. i’m 16 and my mom doesn’t treat me my age either, she moniters the show’s that i record on my tivo, they are TV-14 and i’m SIXTEEN and i’ve tried explaining that to her. just hang in there it’ll get better

—–

Me personally I don’t consider 13 being a TEENAGER…ya know..because you’re still young, naive, and annoying. Now 14 I believe is where teenager-ness starts. That’s when old people can say….’all those teenagers and their rap music and fast tales’ 14 is when you start high school and making decisions for yourself ya know??

I also think it stops at 18 because ( most people) are just finishing high school and all those years of having fun and gettin into trouble are over…when you’re 19 your not a teenager anymore

———

Yes, you become an official teenager the day you turn 13 years old and remain a teenager until the day you turn 20.

Designer Maternity Fashion is Worth the Price Tag

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 6:34 am

When you become pregnant you may be surprised at how expensive designer maternity clothes can cost. Of course, when you buy designer maternity fashion you will look absolutely gorgeous and stylish. That is because designer maternity clothes use special fabrics and designs to really make you look good. But, you may be wondering if the price tag is really worth the clothes you are buying. Well, that really depends. In general, most women choose to spend the money on designer maternity clothes when it is for a special occasion. That includes a big business meeting, a wedding, cocktail party, or other big event. But, in general, women find that the price tag is a little too high for clothes they will only wear for a brief period of time. And, many women claim that they really can’t tell a big difference in designer maternity jeans and affordable maternity jeans. Of course, your budget will play a big role in how much you can afford to spend on maternity clothes. But, overall, you won’t want to spend too much simply because these are clothes that you will wear for a few short months and that is it!

How to plan my four year old’s party?

Filed under: Pregnancy And Parenting — smitha @ 11:30 am

Arts and crafts are always fun. I used to work at a daycare with children of all ages, and no matter how old they were, they loved doing crafts. The girls could make bubble paper: all you need is dish soap, food coloring, straws, tin cake pans, and plain paper. Fill the pans about 1″ deep with water, add a few drops of soap and whatever colors you wish to use, then mix it up. Give each of the girls a straw and let them blow bubbles in the pan of colored water. Next, all they have to do is lay the paper on the bubbles. Once they have created the patterns and color combinations they like, just set them aside to dry. (Be sure to write their name on it so each girl gets the one she made.)

They could also make jewelry out of pasta. They can just paint the pasta (any pasta with a hole in it; like macaroni) then thread yarn through them when they dry.

You could have them make carmel popcorn balls or marshmellow squares to enjoy while they watch a movie, like Chicken Little.

They could also play games like simon says or mother may I. And of course, if they like stories, they could sit in a circle and one girl would start a story then “pass” it on to the next girl, and so on until all of the girls have contributed to creating an enitire story. (The daycare kids loved that one!)

Be creative and hang in there! You’ll do just fine!
